You often hear people claiming freedom to work from home. But the reality is that it destroys the balance of many people’s lives. Being a freelancer is not easy. If your primary source of income, your daily living costs depend on it. And if you’re just starting out as a freelancer, you’re likely to work independently, with the hope that one day you’ll be walking in a project that truly starts your career.

1. Set clear boundaries between work and downtime

All the small tasks take time in the long run, but they are essential to keeping you going. At the end of the day, look at the list of accomplishments and pat yourself on the shoulder for all the hard work you’ve done today.

7. Make a realistic budget

8. Reconnect with routines outside of work hours

If you only live in the freelance bubble, you can easily forget about the small satisfactions of mundane life that keep you grounded. It’s healthy to connect with routines you used to have when you didn’t freelance. For example, if you used to learn new dinner recipes before, start doing that again, and take your time to really get into it. Listen to a podcast whilst cooking, and you’ll soon forget anxieties you had earlier on.

9. Cut out time-wasters from your schedule

Especially when you’re just starting out as a freelancer, there will be clients who expect you to work for free. There will also be clients who underestimate how long their jobs takes, so you end up doing something for hours or days that they tell you “will benefit you” or “teach you something new”. No. Stop doing that. This is your life, and overworking for little or no money will not do any favors for your mental health or financial situation.
